FOOT SURGERY / HALLUX VALGUS SURGERY
WHAT THERE IS TO KNOW
Hallux valgus surgery is surgery to realign a deformed joint in the foot. Also called bunion, hallux valgus is a deformation of the big toe leading to misalignment of the bone and tissues. The bunion would form mainly because of shoes that are too tight, which would then apply too much pressure on the toe and the side of the foot. Another possible factor would be a genetic predisposition.
The presence of a bunion causes pain, discomfort when putting on shoes, as well as skin irritation next to it. Most often, Hallux valgus surgery consists of operating on the largest joint of the forefoot, ie the place where the big toe is connected to the foot. The operation consists of realigning the joint to remedy the pain and swelling.
HALLUX VALGUS SURGERY: BEFORE THE SURGERY
Toe bursitis surgery is recommended for patients for whom bursitis is painful and for whom other non-surgical care has not worked with a significant big toe deformity.
This operation is recommended for patients with bursitis (bunion) causing pain or discomfort and who have not achieved positive results by non-surgical means.
HALLUX VALGUS SURGERY: THE SURGICAL TECHNIQUE
There are different surgical techniques to treat hallux valgus. The surgery consists of making an incision along the hallux valgus.
The technique consists of opening the big toe joint, performing an osteotomy and then realigning the bone fragments in their normal position and fixing them with special screws.
Exostectomy involves resecting the protruding end of the bone.
