GYNECOLOGY AND IN VITRO FERTILIZATION
WHAT THERE IS TO KNOW
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the process where a woman’s eggs are fertilized outside the body before being placed in the uterus to increase the chances of pregnancy.
IVF is a solution for patients who have difficulty conceiving a child naturally. Fertility problems can be caused by endometriosis, low sperm count, ovulation problems, problems with the fallopian tubes or uterus.
Treatment begins with hormone injections to stimulate the production of multiple eggs instead of the monthly one.
The eggs mature and then are removed from the ovaries, which is called a follicular puncture. Most of the time the operation is performed with a needle and under sedation. It is normal to feel some pain after the procedure.
Doctors will usually collect between 5 and 30 eggs. Sometimes a donor will supply the eggs for IVF. The sperm used for fertilization can be that of a partner or a donor. The eggs are fertilized outside the body and the carefully selected embryos are then placed in the uterus.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is recommended in cases where there are difficulties in conceiving naturally. This can be caused by male (low sperm count or mobility) or female (damaged or blocked fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders) fertility issues.
IVF is advised as an option when there is a reasonable chance of success. Applicants should be of normal weight and a healthy uterus. The chances of success reduce with age, however, the oldest woman to successfully have a baby with IVF was 66 years old.
