HIP PROSTHESIS

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The damaged femoral head of the hip is extracted and replaced by a metal rod introduced into the femoral shaft. The femoral stem is either sealed or otherwise fixed.

The articular surface of the acetabular cartilage is milled and then replaced by a piece of metal, ceramic or plastic. This is fixed by screws or cement.

Traditionally hip replacement surgery is performed openly. However, there are new minimally invasive techniques that involve making smaller incisions to reduce bleeding and scarring.

However, sometimes the hip cannot be replaced through these small incisions, which is why traditional surgery is usually preferred.

HIP PROSTHESIS: BEFORE SURGERY

It is a major surgical intervention, the patient must be properly prepared by a careful clinical examination, radiological and biological explorations.

HIP PROSTHESIS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

A total hip prosthesis procedure involves replacing the surfaces of the joint
of the hip (the acetabulum, femoral head and neck) by a prosthetic implant.
It is a common surgery for patients suffering from several pathologies (osteoarthritis,
inflammatory arthritis, osteonecrosis of the femoral head…).which cause pain and swelling
joints and reduce hip mobility.
The total hip prosthesis relieves pain, improves joint function and walking
in patients who have pain and difficulty with such movement.
During a total hip replacement, the damaged cartilage is removed and replaced with
new materials to support the joints. They can be metals, plastics or
ceramics. The prosthetic parts can then be fixed either by sealing the joint to the bone
(surgical cement) or by using a coating to fix the bone and joints.
When getting a total hip replacement, patients should discuss with the
surgeon, his model and the materials used. Prosthetic hips have gone a long way
improved in recent years, more and more modern devices are used and
sophisticated with state-of-the-art technologies.

The total hip prosthesis can be the ideal solution in case of joint destruction, this one
can be caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis. She can
also be recommended in case of fractures or dislocation of the hip, or in the
reconstructions after resection of bone tumours.

HIP PROSTHESIS: AFTER THE TREATMENT

Post-operative follow-up After total hip replacement surgery, some patients will be able to walk a little the day after surgery with the assistance of a physiotherapist.

The new hip is usually painful at first, and it’s normal to spend four to five days in the clinic. Often the patient will be able to walk without crutches after 6 weeks, and will be fully recovered after 12 weeks.
