INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY AND CARDIAC SURGERY

WHAT THERE IS TO KNOW

PACEMAKER POSITION: WHAT IT IS

The patient receives a local anesthetic so as not to feel pain during the procedure. Transvenous implantation is the most common method of implanting a pacemaker.

The surgeon will start by making a 5-6 cm incision in the upper chest, below the collarbone and near the heart, to access a vein. Through this, two wires are inserted into the heart (the amount of wires depends on the type of pacemaker used).

A small pocket is then created in the skin, where the stimulator is inserted. The wires are then connected to the pacemaker and the pacemaker is tested to make sure it is working properly. The incision area is then closed with sutures.

PACEMAKER PLACEMENT: AFTER THE TREATMENT

After surgery, the patient’s heartbeat will be closely monitored and a chest x-ray will be taken to check that the pacemaker is in the correct position.

Before they are discharged from hospital, patients will be given a card that shows the make and model of pacemaker they were fitted with, which they should always keep with them.
