MENISC SURGERY

WHAT THERE IS TO KNOW

Meniscal surgery is performed arthroscopically, i.e. without opening the joint.

Arthroscopy is a microsurgical technique, developed about thirty years ago. It has revolutionized knee surgery, allowing surgery to be performed without opening the knee. Advances in miniaturization have made it possible for several years to operate on the menisci and perform articular lavage, to eliminate particles of cartilage in osteoarthritis, or to remove free fragments in oseochondritis.

Arthroscopy also makes it possible to cut a plica (abnormal attachment causing painful friction and wear of the cartilage), or to clean the knee in order to release the articular amplitudes.

MENISC SURGERY: BEFORE THE SURGERY

It is a surgical procedure that lasts 20 to 40 minutes. It is practiced either loco-regional or general anesthesia. It is performed during the day (outpatient surgery).

THE SURGICAL TECHNIQUE OF MENISC SURGERY

The surgeon makes two small incisions on either side of the patellar tendon, he will painlessly insert his instruments into your sleeping knee: an optical fiber connected to a television camera, and various instruments (tweezers, feeler, vacuum cleaner. ..).

You will be free to watch television with the surgeon, while he acts to solve your problem. Once the intervention is carried out, he will suture the two entry points with two absorbable threads.

MENISCAL SURGERY: AFTER THE TREATMENT

Outpatients are discharged in the evening, once the sensitivity has completely returned, and after having managed to urinate normally.

Before leaving, everyone will see a physiotherapist who will give them all the advice they need to walk well again. Some work well immediately, but limping for a few days is common.

Walking sticks can then help the first week. Functional rehabilitation sessions will be prescribed for you, starting around the fifth day after the operation, with the physiotherapist.
