ROTATOR CUFF SURGERY
WHAT THERE IS TO KNOW
ROTATOR CUFF SURGERY
The rotator cuff is made up of a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint. Rotator cuff surgery is a procedure that restores part of the damaged rotator cuff tendons.
When a tear occurs, it causes significant pain when moving the shoulder, especially when the hand is moved up or away from the body.
A rupture of the rotator cuff can occur acutely following trauma to the shoulder, or simply chronically (wear and tear with age).
ROTATOR CUFF SURGERY: BEFORE SURGERY
Surgery is generally necessary when alternative methods of treatment are doomed to failure (medical treatment and functional rehabilitation). It can be performed in open surgery, mini-open, but it most often occurs by arthroscopy.
Rotator cuff surgery may be indicated in cases where a rotator cuff injury is causing chronic shoulder pain and/or weakness.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE
The surgeon may use an arthroscope (a small imaging device) to visualize the rotator cuff and perform the necessary surgery through a small incision.
Athroscopic surgery is increasingly popular and has shown positive results in patients with joint problems.
To perform open shoulder surgery, the surgeon makes a mini-incision along the deltoid muscle to make the necessary repairs.
ROTATOR CUFF SURGERY: AFTER THE TREATMENT
After the operation, the patients will have to put the arm in a sling, to protect the reinsertion performed of the rotator cuff and this for a period of 45 days.
Thereafter, a functional rehabilitation program must be continued in order to recover good joint mobility with good muscle strength.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ROTATOR CUFF SURGERY
In most patients, rotator cuff surgery solves the problems of pain and functional impotence.
Some complications may rarely enamel the evolution, namely: Infection, pain or stiffness.
